Aquawatch is an initiative within the Group on Earth Observations (GEO). It aims to establish and develop global applications of water quality data based on earth observations (satellites and drones).
Earth observation methodology possesses great potential to support water quality monitoring programmes, particularly in remote and inaccessible areas. However, thorough calibration of the associated algorithms is required to ensure reliable observations. To support the development of effective earth observation application, GEO AquaWatch
- Facilitates partnerships between providers and users of earth observation data,
- Improves analysis and integration of in situ and earth observation water quality data,
- Develops tailored water quality products and information services,
- Support technology transfer and access to water quality data products,
- Enhances education and capacity for the use of water quality information for decision making.
The coordinator of the GEMS/Water Data Centre, Philipp Saile, has long been a member of the Management Team of GEO AquaWatch and is currently leading the Technical Working Group.
